Who am I?

My name is Lauren Barash. This is a project I completed about my family history for Emerging Technology. I gained a lot of knowledge through doing this project and was surprised about how little I actually knew to start off. I had various ways of gathering information for this project.  First, I interviewed my mom and dad. They gave me tons of very helpful information, but I needed more.  To get more, I next e-mailed my grandma, grandpa and aunt. With all of this information, I was able to make a family tree using Family Echo.  I was also able to create a Prezi, Infographic, and a 5-Frame Storyboard using all the information.

It is scary to think of the topics that he brought up because it is all 100% true. Everyday we use so much technology that this generation is full of people that can't properly communicated. Not going to lie, I think it is easier to say certain things over text but this is where the issue is. People are feeling lonely because of all of the technology. Yeah, you have facebook or twitter friends but those are not true friends. I thought it was interesting how they brought up the dad child bond. It is so true. As I kid I was outside all of the time. Now with all of this technology, parents are setting up games on the ipad for them to play and this is not the same. This was so interesting and true.

This blog post was inspiring. With cheer, work and honors classes, for me life can be hard at times. Especially this year. To be completely honest sometimes I have given up because I don't want to learn anymore. As a student, I need to keep pushing. In this article, I learned that its not just the material you are learning in school, its your ability to keep pushing and persevere. I believe the teacher is concerned about how the students are giving up. They are giving up by not taking opportunities, taking the easy was out and being rude and disrespectful. When students are doing this, it is not preparing them for the future and it can destroy your happiness. So, its not just the math problems and writing that your get from school, its how you learn and persevere.

Reflect on your stop-motion animation project. How did it go? What worked? What didn't work? If you're not finished - why? If you are finished go in to detail about the project and what you learned. Give as much detail and information as possible.

My project didn't turn out as well as i would have hoped although its not bad. The project in itself worked. I took the pictures in my room and the pictures ended up with really weird lighting. The idea of a stop motion with the crayons worked though. I am finished. When i first started the project, I grouped the shades of colors so when I placed them on the board they looked like a rainbow. I learned that by taking pictures of the same thing and adding to it can create a really cool video. I want to make another stop motion with a different subject. I think they are so cool :)

What is your idea for your stop-motion animation? Explain yourself. Have you started taking photos? If not, when do you plan to take your photos? What is your action plan for today? What is your plan to GET SOMETHING DONE?

Well, at first I was going to do a stop motion animation related to cheer. But, then I realized that it would be way too hard. So, I explored some other stop motion videos and I thought of something. For my stop motion I am using crayons. I am gluing them onto a canvas or some sort and I am making a design out of it. Then, I am going to melt them and that is my idea. I have not started taking photos. I am getting the supplies after school today. I also need to take all of the photos I have off of my phone because I ran out of storage. My plan is to finish all of this before Monday.

What is stop motion animation? If you don't know, look it up! Explain.

This is a process that makes stationary objects look like they are moving. These are created by taking an object like a figure of some sort and then taking pictures of it in a path that makes it look as it is moving. You can take thousands of pictures and put them together and it can make it look like your object is traveling.

What is a storyboard? If you don't know, what do you think it is? How are storyboards used? What are some different ways that storyboards can be made?

I don't know much about a storyboard. I believe it is taking pictures and putting them together however I am unsure. I think they are used to tell a story without words. I believe in order to make one you just put all of the pics together.

Did you get your pictures taken yesterday? Did you enjoy going on the photo scavenger hunt? Why do you think I had you take those types of pictures?

     Yes! It was a lot of fun. I think it was good to do it because it is definitely something different to do. I think we are taking these pictures for a stop motion video but this is just a guess. I have already started to enjoy this project. And... I love taking pictures.

What do you know about photography? When you take pictures what kind of camera do you use? Do you use your cell phone? Do you own a digital camera that is not your cell phone? Explain.

I know a lot about photography. I took photography first semester and it was a lot of fun. When I take pictures I use my phone but my dad has a really nice camera.  We use this to take pictures for our Christmas card or when we are dressed up. The pictures on the nice camera turn out the best. We have a few digital cameras that we no longer use as well.

Welcome back! How was your Spring Break? Tell me all about it. You've been out of school for 10 days so I know you will have plenty to share. Make it good!

My Spring Break was relaxing. I have been extremely busy with cheer and school this year and it was nice to finally have a break. My family went to Mexico. We stayed at La Estancia in Cabo. It was very nice. This is our second time going there because last year we loved it. In mexico the majority of the time I layed on the beach. I occasionally got in the ocean but the waves were really rough. We went to different places for dinner every night. My favorite was romeo and Juleita. It was Italian and I got fettuccine alfredo which was awesome. The restaurant was outdoors and so cool. The excursions we did were zip lining and a boat day which was great. Overall it was a fun and relaxing trip.

Prepare yourself... I want you to really THINK about this blog post. I mean really use your brain. What is the significance of an infographic? What is the point of pairing graphics and information together? What impact can this have on a reader or viewer. EXPLAIN.

Info graphics have a huge significance. An infogrphic is an organized way that a reader can look at the information. There are many different types of learners. There are visual learners, auditory learners and kinesthetic learners. The majority of people are actually visual learners which means that they learn best by looking at graphics, watching a demonstration or reading organized information. When a reader goes to seek information about a topic on a website for insistence, they are going to pick the website that has the least amount of text. This website will also be organized with colors and the information will be easily accessible. No one wants to read a long page of boring text with added fluff. This is where an infographic is so handy. There is no time wasting fluff. It is organized with colors and shapes. They are filled with facts and easy to comprehend with information brought to you in a different form. Infogrpahics are truly helpful.

If you had the option of writing a 3 page paper or creating an infographic - which one would you choose? Explain yourself.

I would definitely choose an infographic. First of all, inforgraphics are fun to create! It allows you to be creative and use your imagination. Because of this, information about a topic is eye catching for the readers. Writing an essay is very boring and usually in every essay there is a lot of fluff. Fluff is information that is not necessary. This can be make it very hard for readers to take information in. An infographic is a more organized form of an essay for sure.

How far along are you on your infographic? Will you be finished and ready to embed on to your blog by the end of the hour today? Do you think you've used your time wisely in class? Explain yourself.

I was absent on Friday because I was out of town. So, I have not had a lot of time to work on this. I am no where close to being done and it is stressing me out. However, I have used my time wisely. I have a lot of little details and things that are very eye catching but these take a ton of time to create so that is why this is taking so long. I will finish it for homework tonight.

Why do I have you brainstorm and collect your information in a Google Doc before putting in to final draft? Explain.

You have to collect info on a Google document for many reasons. I always collect information before starting any type of project because it makes it organized and easy to use. Also, I have collected a lot of facts and there is no way that I would have been able to remember them all. This is very organized and will make creating a piktochart easy.

Yesterday I introduced you to infographics... tell me again what they are and how they are used? What is the benefit of an infographic? What goes into an infogrpahic?

Also, go out and see if you can find an already existing infographic on your global issue. Save the image to your computer and upload the image into your blog post for today. Save the source link to the image so that you can site the image in your blog post. See my examples at the end of this post.

An info graphic is a visual way to organize information. It is very organized and are usually filled with pictures and information about a topic. It has tons of statistics and representations to go with these.  The benefit is seeing crucial information in an organized fashion. Because they are so easy to read, it is easy for people to take a lot of information in at once.

My Global Issue Paper

My topic is Alcohol Abuse. When researching for this essay, I learned an abundance of information. I learned that depression and family problems are examples of why people may resort to alcohol. I also learned the effects to light and heavy drinking. I also learned about how people should call for help if they have become addicted. I learned that alcohol is not a substance to mess around with. Despite the effects on the body it can leave to tragedies like car accidents as well.

Where are you at with your 5 paragraph essay so far? How is it coming? Is it easy to write? Difficult to write? Is it helpful that you created an outline first? Explain.

In my essay, I recently finished my third paragraph. It is coming very well. The outline has made it extremely easy. I am very glad that I spent a long time on my outline because that has made my essay come together. I have definitely expanded from my outline though. On my outline I went into detail and in my essay, I took the detail and elaborated. I hope to finish my essay today and if not at home but all I have is a body paragraph and the conclusion. All in all, it is going great!

Tell me about your Sweetheart weekend. If you didn't go to Sweetheart, what did you do? I want details!

I actually didn't go to sweetheart. This weekend I had a cheer competition in Chicago. It was awesome. My team (Platinum) ended up getting second in our division which is really good. However, we did not end up getting the paid bid to Florida but we are going to try for that in Texas in two weeks. In Chicago, I didn't get to do anything other then cheer which was disappointing cause they have a lot of shops and malls. It was also colder than Kansas. All in all, my team did really good at the compeition which made the trip a blast! I missed school Thursday and Monday so this is my first day of school in a while with the snow days.

 Who do you look up to in life? Why? What have they done to help you or guide you?

I look up to my neighbor Caroline who I have known since I was little. She is 5 years older than me. When I was little, she was my babysitter. I look up to her because she is a good person all around. She always helped me with any problems that I had and she is always there for me. She often gave me advice with girl drama. I know that if I ever need help that I can call Caroline. She is a Junior at KU and she is working to be a nurse. She works so hard and soon this will be me!

Tell me about the global issue you selected yesterday. Briefly restate your paragraph from yesterday.

The topic that I chose is Alcohol abuse. The reason why I chose this is because I am interested to know more negative effects of drinking. I also chose it because in High school, there are a few people making stupid decisions and don’t understand how much damage they could be doing to themselves. I have a little background information. I know that alcohol can destroy your liver. I also know that too much alcohol intake can lead you into serious health issues. If you have had a lot to drink, you can make stupid decisions that you could regret in the future.  I hope to learn why and how it causes you to be in this state.  I want to learn the long-term effects of drinking at a young age.  I also hope to learn more facts about this topic in general.

If you could pick one issue in the world to fix or change what would it be and why?

If i could fix one issue in the world and fix it , I would definitely find a cure for cancer. This is a huge thing that has affected many people in my life! I think that when I get older I want to research and find cures however it would be great if I could just fix it right now!!!! This is an awful illness and affects so many people daily! It would be amazing to find a cure!

What is a Public Service Announcement? If you don't know what it is, Google it. In your own words, now tell me what it is? What are they used for? Can you recall an example of a PSA you've seen before?

A public service announcement is an advertisement that a radio or television station airs for a specific cause or for charity. A public service announcement is not paid advertising. A broadcaster can donate time for the PSA to be announced. Once when I was listening to the radio, I heard them say to make sure and donate to the Salvation Army Bell ringers. This is definitely an example of a PSA. Now when i listen to the radio and watch television, I am going to keep my eyes out for PSA's.

Tell me about your three day weekend. How was it? What did you do? Elaborate

My three day weekend was great. On friday, it was my friend Mollie's birthday. Since school ended early, we put a blindfold on her and took her to skyzone. After, we went to her house and it that was my Friday. On Saturday, I had cheer. I also caught up on some sleep. That night, I went out to dinner with my competitive cheer team (Platinum). The next day I had cheer practice. After practice, me and my platinum friends got together to watch a cheer competition that was live on the computer. Then the next day (Sunday) I had cheer practice again ha ha. I also had practice for the sophomore class dance. The dance is really coming together and I am getting excited about it. Even though I had a ton of cheer practice, this weekend was still relaxing.

What have you learned about Google Drive and Google Presentation so far? What do you like about it? What problems have you run in to? Is it better than PowerPoint?

I have learned a lot about Google Drive and Google Presentation so far. I actually love using Google drive and I look forward to using it to save all of my work. I learned that it is a very convenient way to store your information. I love how in Google Presentation, you don't even have to worry about saving your work. It just saves automatically. Last night when I was making my "Who am I" power point, my pictures wouldn't save on my computer from my email. So, I just saved them to Google drive and it worked fine after that. Google Presentation is extremely convenient and I will definitely choose this over regular Power point. You don't have to worry about sending it to your email. Google Drive is the home for all of my files and will now be for a long time. I have not had any problems in Google Drive and Google Presentation.

Tell me if you agree with this statement and then explain why or why not. "Images on the internet are 'free game' - if someone posted I should be able to use it."

I do not agree with this statement for many reasons. When you post something on the internet, the work belongs to you. If someone took my photograph that I worked hard for and said that it was theirs, I would not be very happy. I believe that if you need to get a picture off of the internet that does not belong to you then you should site the image to give them the credit. Some people work very hard for their photographs and it would not be right of you to take it and say that it is your image. So, overall images on the internet are not free game because they belong to someone else.

What do you want to learn in the class this semester? What information do you want to walk away with that you didn't know before? Elaborate!

I wanted to take this class for numerous reasons. Last year I decided to take Computer Applications.I loved it because it improved my knowledge of the software and I now can work really fast because of the shortcuts that I learned. This also decreased my study time when I have to work on a computer. I took this class because I wanted to become even more familiar with computers. I have never been the "technology queen" of the family. That one definitely goes to my sister and when I am confused about something I go to her for help. I think I will get lots out of this class and maybe never have to ask my sister help on my assignments. I also took this class because I am very familiar with Macs however not as much DELL. I have a computer exactly like this in my office so I think this class will definitely improve my skills. I just want to walk away with more knowledge with computers overall.
